David Hughes Director - Strategy

"IP delivers economic value to companies."
Recommend David Hughes

For David, IP is the building block of Australia's competitiveness in a global market. He sees it as a lever for businesses to capture new markets, increase market share and ensure the sustainability of their competitive advantage.

“Ultimately companies need to decide which markets they will compete in, how they will win in those markets and then execute that strategy effectively. David works closely with other IP specialist within Glasshouse Advisory and across the Xenith IP Group to ensure his clients have a clear picture of their current position.

“Businesses need to know where they truly sit in the competitive landscape. From this position, they can make informed decisions, manage risks and identify and realise new opportunities.” David has guided many clients – from Australia’s largest listed companies to start ups – through this process.

While David has worked in the patent area for over 25 years, he is the first to say that filing patents is not always the right approach. “What’s important is that companies make considered decisions about their IP.”

“If registered IP protection fits the business strategy, then always protect with an eye on enforcement” He is proud of the proven resilience of his IP protection work.  David assisted a major Australian company adopt a vertical integration strategy, which involved navigating a contentious IP landscape and a crowded market to successfully launch a large range of products.

This ability to combine big picture thinking with an eye for the fine detail that has built David a loyal and growing client base.
